Trout stocked in Silver Spring Lake

The state this month stocked more than 2,000 trout in several ponds statewide, including two in the area: Barber Pond in South Kingstown and Silver Spring Lake in North Kingstown.

Trout were also stocked for the winter fishing season in Exeter at the Wood River Route 165 access.

The state Department of Environmental Management assured anglers that fish will hold over for the April 12 opening day of trout season.

A current fishing license and a trout conservation stamp are required to keep or possess a trout. The daily limit for trout through February is two per day. Anglers are reminded of a new regulation that began in 2012 that prohibits the use of felt soled footgear in any fresh waters.

Although there is no safe ice currently, the state advises anglers to check with individual communities about safe ice conditions on local ponds before ice fishing. The DEM does not monitor ice conditions in local communities. Ice must have a uniform thickness of at least 6 inches before it is considered safe by the state. It generally takes at least five to seven consecutive days of temperatures in the low 20s.
