Lisa (Glaser) Tyre
Lisa (Glaser) Tyre, of Canton, Mass., formerly of Jamestown, died on March 20, 2014. Born in Vienna, Austria, she and her family escaped the Holocaust and arrived in the United States from New Zealand in 1947. She began her studies at the University of New Zealand and received her bachelor’s degree in French from UCLA. She earned her master’s degree in library science from UCBerkeley.
Mrs. Tyre began her professional career as an instructor of German at Reed College in Portland, Ore. She then became the French and German coach at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, Penn. She served as director of the school district libraries in Radnor, Penn., before assuming the directorship of the Episcopal Academy Libraries in Lower Merion, Penn. After relocating to Rhode Island, Mrs. Tyre was named a professor of German at Salve Regina University in Newport. She was the originator of the film studies program at the Circle of Scholars at Salve Regina, and served as chair of the board of trustees of the Jamestown Philomenian Library.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Richard Tyre, and was the loving mother of Marcie Tyre Berkley and her husband Forrest Berkley of Concord, Mass., Geoffrey Tyre of Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, and Nicole Tyre and her husband Phil Drozd of Ardmore, Penn. Her eldest child, Shelley Tyre, drowned in 1999. Lisa Tyre was the cherished grandmother of Taylor Scott Berkley and Lincoln Thatcher Berkley, and the dear sister of Frank Glaser of Palos Verdes, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at the Orchard Cove Retirement Community, 1 Del Pond Drive, Canton, Mass., on Friday, March 28, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Newport Music Festival, P.O. Box 3300, Newport, RI 02840.
