Bicycle ride across four bridges Sunday

The second annual 4 Bridges Ride sponsored by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority will take place on Sunday, Sept. 21. The 26-mile charity ride will allow cyclists an opportunity to cross the Verrazzano, Pell, Sakonnet River and Mount Hope bridges that connect communities on Narragansett Bay. The event starts in North Kingstown and finishes on the campus of Roger Williams University in Bristol. No roads will be closed to traffic. Cyclists will ride through seven coastal communities during the event.

This course has been approved by the police departments of seven municipalities, state police, the bridge authority and the Department of Transportation. The route begins at the park-and-ride on Boston Neck Road in North Kingstown and there will be a vehicle free lane down the off-ramp to Route 138 over the Jamestown Bridge. The ride continues through the toll plaza and across the Newport Bridge; the lane will be coned off from traffic with support from police.

At the downtown Newport off-ramp, riders will merge with regular traffic on Farwell Avenue. Police, volunteers, traffic cones and signage will direct traffic and participants on Aquidneck Island. All traffic laws apply including stoplights, stop signs and rotaries.

When the ride turns from Stringham Road onto West Main Road in Portsmouth, participants will once again have a devoted lane for riding. This lane will be monitored by police and volunteers at every intersection. All traffic lights are to be followed. Once participants take the Hummocks Avenue exit toward the Sakonnet River Bridge, they will no longer have a protected lane. Crossing the Sakonnet must be done in single file. When participants have reached the turnaround in Tiverton and cross back into Portsmouth, the ride will head toward the Mount Hope Bridge on Anthony Road and Boyds Lane.

At the base of the Portsmouth bridge, riders will be grouped together in packs to ensure a safe passage over the Mount Hope Bridge to the finish line.
