Newport County lawmakers to meet

Sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Newport County, the area’s state delegation will meet as a group with its constituents on Saturday, March 22, from 9:45 to 11:15 a.m. at the Newport Public Library. The event is free and open to the public.

Lawmakers expected to be in attendance are Reps. Deborah Ruggiero, Marvin Abney, Dennis Canario, Raymond Gallison, Daniel Reilly and Lauren Carson, and Sens. Louis DiPalma and Christopher Ottiano. All are Democrats, except for Republicans Reilly and Ottiano.

Ruggiero is a Jamestown resident who represents her hometown and Middletown in the House. Sen. President Teresa Paiva Weed, who represents Newport and Jamestown, was invited but hasn’t yet committed.

League member Erin Dollard will moderate the forum. Legislators will open the program with a brief statement about their priorities for the session, and there will be prepared questions regarding ethics, education, voting procedures and women’s health. There will also be a chance for audience members to ask questions.
