Police Log

The Jamestown Police Department from May 25 to June 1 responded to 349 calls for service. Of those calls, officers performed 154 security checks of vacant homes, businesses and public buildings. The police also responded to five automobile accidents, eight fire calls, eight animal complaints and six alarms. There were 40 traffic stops, resulting in one arrest and four citations.


Andrew E. Mead, 62, of Douglas Street, Jamestown, was charged May 27 for having an outstanding bench warrant issued from 2nd District Court in Newport. According to police, Mead was arrested after officers, who were aware of the warrant, saw him near the liquor store on Southwest Avenue. He was transported to the police station and processed. After complaining of back pain, Mead was taken to Newport Hospital.


Walter Konopka, 74, of East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick, was charged May 31 with driving under the influence of alcohol, refusing to submit to a chemical test, and driving with a suspended license. According to police, Konopka was pulled over on North Main Road at 1 a.m. for multiple operating violations. This was his second DUI offense. He was taken to the police station, processed, arraigned and released. A court date was scheduled for June 5 at 2nd District Court in Newport.
