State closes Mackerel Cove for swimming

State health officials on Wednesday afternoon recommended the closure of Mackerel Cove Beach in Jamestown for swimming due to high bacertia counts. Officials will continue to monitor the water quality and recommend reopening the beaches when the water is again safe for swimming.

When a beach closure is recommended, water-quality analysis is conducted by the Rhode Island Department of Health or a state-certified laboratory.

Also closed was Spouting Rock Beach and Easton's Beach in Newport.
