State eyes improperly mounted E-ZPass transponders

The state bridge authority will charge E-ZPass customers higher tolls if their transponders are not mounted properly onto their vehicles.

Starting July 18, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority will charge drivers $2 per axel if a tollbooth employee has to open the gate. Penalties for repeat offenders include a $25 fine and transponder deactivation. The current toll for residential passenger vehicles is 83 cents.

Approximately 1,000 motorists per month need assistance at the toll plaza because of improperly mounted transponders.

According to Buddy Croft, executive director, this causes significant safety hazards and traffic delays. He said other tolling agencies are taking similar precautions.
