Mary Catherine “Kay” Carr (Shirley)

Mary Catherine “Kay” Carr (Shirley), 80, of Jamestown, passed away suddenly Feb. 21, 2017.

She was the wife of the late Walter Watson Carr Sr.

Born in Philadelphia, she summered in Jamestown with her relatives, where she met her husband. She was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Stillman) Shirley.

Mrs. Carr trained as a bookkeeper and worked at a number of regional banks in various capacities. For more than 10 years, she worked at the University of Rhode Island women’s athletics department as equipment manager. She enjoyed music, dancing, cooking, vacationing in Florida and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was the mother of Elizabeth Carr Stevens of Providence, Walter W. Carr Jr. of Jamestown, and the late Leah Carr McGowan; grandmother of Olivia Catherine McGowan and Caleb Carr Stevens. She also is survived by her beloved nephew and nieces, Curtis and Donna Leister, Pam Carr and Carolyn Sears; and she was the sister of the late Susan Leister and George Shirley.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. March 25 at Central Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Hospital would be appreciated.
