Andrew “Drew” Thomas McCarthy Jr.
He was the son of Andrew and Kathleen (Lineen) McCarthy of Niantic, Conn., and was married to Carla (Williams) for 22 years.
From 2007-15, Drew and his family called Jamestown home, where they were members of St. Mark Catholic Church.
Drew was a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and served in the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator and ROTC instructor. After his service, he pursued a master’s degree in theology at Spring Hill College and a Ph.D. in theology and religious studies at The Catholic University of America. He taught for Saint Leo University, Salve Regina University and Anna Maria College, where he became a tenured associate professor. His publications included the book “Francis of Assisi as Artist of the Spiritual Life.”
He had a great appreciation for spirituality, coffee, art, education, impromptu song and dance, conversation, poetry and sailing.
Beside his parents and wife, Drew is survived by his children, Andrew, Kristjana, Kieran, Justin and Juliana; brother Gregory and his wife Mary and children Delia and Liam of Niantic; sister Krystn (Hickman) and her husband Bruce and son Bobby of Hopkinton, Mass.; brother Adam and his wife Elizabeth and children Philip, Anthony and Mariana of Hopkinton.
A funeral Mass and burial with full military honors is scheduled for March 21 at Arlington National Cemetery.
