Matthew Powell

Matthew Powell, 59, passed away peacefully March 8, 2017, surrounded by his family after a five-month struggle with cancer.

Matt was born at the Newport Naval Hospital to the late Cdr. and Mrs. John C. Powell. He leaves his son, Tyler Lane of Austin, Texas; sister, Barbara Powell of Portsmouth and her daughter Marissa Corda of Miami, Fla.; and his brothers, Chris Powell and his wife Candy of Jamestown and Peter Powell of Sausalito, Calif.

Known as “Photo Matt” in his earlier years around Newport and Middletown, he was a graduate of Middletown High School’s class of 1976 and the Rhode Island School of Photography.

He was a talented artist, photographer, skilled woodworker and painter. He worked for The Preservation Society of Newport County, where he was a proud member of the Elms caretaking crew. Matt had an extensive portfolio of art work and photographs that he was pleased to share with whomever was interested. He loved the beach, cats, his car, strolling the mansions and the Newport Art Museum and walking the streets of Newport looking for unique subjects for his photos. He was a member of the Newport Art Museum and preservation society.

Matt had a great sense of humor, (almost) always had a smile on his face and always was appreciative of anything done for him. Donations may be made in his memory to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties Hospice Program, 1184 E. Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Matt will be interred in Cedar Cemetery in Jamestown. Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of his life and talent from 4-7 p.m. March 20 at the Hampton Inn, 317 W. Main Road, Middletown.
