Jonathan Eells Welles

Jonathan Eells Welles, 62, died suddenly April 17, 2017, at his home in Jamestown due to heart failure.

Born in Saranac Lake, N.Y., he was the son of the late Edward O’Malley Welles and Frances Eells Welles, formerly of Washington, D.C.

Retired last year from Citigroup as a supervisory equities analyst, he was an alumnus of The Hotchkiss School and Claremont McKenna College. He was a writer, a golfer, a man of singular vision and broad mind, an optimist and true gentleman. He had lived in Paris, Rabat, Morocco, Lagos,

Nigeria, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Washington, D.C., New York City, Venice Beach, Calif., Naples, Fla., and San Francisco.

With gregarious wit, he entertained often with exotic stories. A devoted husband and father, he was beloved by wife Paulette and son Sam of San Francisco. In addition, he is survived by a sister, Parmelee Welles Tolkan, of Lake Placid, N.Y., and a brother, Edward Welles, of Kennebunkport, Maine. He is mourned and survived by the Welles, Thibault, Eells, and Chisholm clans, as well as many loving friends.

Taken from us far too soon, he leaves emptiness in our lives, but continues to fill our hearts.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, in St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 87 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown.
