Author will read from debut novel Sunday

A San Diegan who lived in North Kingstown for 30 years will read from her debut novel at 7 p.m. May 29 at the library, 26 North Road.

Kate Porter is the author of “Lesson in Disguise,” the journey of a handcrafted book from its printing in 1820 Virginia to its destination 150 years later in California. As it’s passed down through eight caretakers, stories are told from the eras of slavery, Civil War, women’s suffrage, Jim Crow and the Vietnam War.

Porter is the sister-in-law of Elaine Porter, president of the Conanicut Island Art Association. She will sign copies of her book at the reading.
