Possums could help island eradicate deer tick issue

To the editor:

A natural predator of ticks are possums. They love this tasty treat. We should somehow fill the island with these wonderful marsupials. They have a robust immune system and are about eight times less likely to carry rabies.

When they “play possum” they mimic the look and smell of being dead when alarmed or threatened. It is an involuntary fainting reaction which they recover from in minutes up to four hours.

They are a very interesting animal. Not to be feared but very much needed to help deter ticks.
