Free boat tour of oyster farms in Dutch Harbor

Oyster farmers from five different companies will lead a boat tour of Dutch Harbor aquafarms, which have been under fire since the area has become the densest aquaculture site in the state. Westwind Drive residents say that commercial fishing is ruining their waterfront properties by disturbing their views and making it difficult for recreational boaters, kayakers and swimmers to navigate.

The free tour, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, was organized by Jules Opton-Himmel, owner of Walrus and Carpenter Oysters. He wants to introduce oyster fishermen to Jamestowners while explaining the methods of farming the ocean.

Alongside Opton-Himmel will be fishermen Mark Goerner, Tony Pinheiro, Bill Gregan and Jesse Bazrarnick. Oysters will be served during the tour. Email team@walrusandcarpenteroysters.com to reserve a seat on the boat. Guests should dress appropriately and meet at the West Ferry docks.
