C. Lloyd (Tommy) Thomas

C. Lloyd (Tommy) Thomas, 83, of Barton, England, and formerly of Lincoln and Concord, Mass., died of heart failure Sept. 1 at the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge, England. A civil engineer, Lloyd specialized in calculating the structural needs of dams and bridges in earthquake zones in Europe, including Iceland, and in Arab countries.

A graduate of Fenn and Middlesex School in Concord, Lloyd attended Princeton, until a health problem necessitated transferring to Yale, where he completed his BA as a Winthrop Scholar. He received his BSc from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). An accomplished musician, Lloyd regularly played violin or viola in small chamber ensembles, often as first violin. He was proficient in nine languages, including Icelandic, and led courses in mathematics, the Icelandic sagas and modern Greek at the University of the Third Age in Cambridge.

He is survived by his wife, Marina Warner, and four children by his prior marriage to Ursula Emma Escher, of Andelfingen, Switzerland; Andrea, of Reading, England; Daniel of Zurich; Monica of Russikon; and Barbara of Winterthur; two granddaughters, two grandsons, Linus and, Simon, various nieces and nephews in the USA; and a sister, Jocelyn Thomas Shaw, of Fairfield, Conn.
