Coat drives in town to benefit needy

With the colder weather arriving, needy Rhode Islanders will be searching for coats, mittens and hats to keep them warm through New Year’s and into the spring.

Jamestowners will have two opportunities to help those neighbors.

Architect Lisa Carlisle is organizing a coat drive at the Bomes Theatre, 34 Narragansett Ave. Jackets can be dropped off at her office, Suite 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through Nov. 17. Those items will be handed out during a coat drive scheduled at the State House lawn on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Also in town, Central Baptist Church will host its second annual “Warm Coats from Warm Hearts” event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18. That’s when the church will donate coats, scarves, mittens, gloves and hats that have been collected.

Residents can drop off items at the church, 99 Narragansett Ave., between 9 a.m. and noon Mondays through Thursdays until Nov. 17.
