NORTH KINGSTOWN ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT North Kingstown’s freshman football team after winning the Division II championship against Mount Hope at Polisena Stadium in Johnston. The varsity team will play for the title in two weeks. NORTH KINGSTOWN ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT On the first play from scrimmage under the Friday night lights, North Kingstown quarterback Joe Gilmartin hit Zack Pezza for a 40-yard gain during the Division II semifinals against East Greenwich.

That was the beginning of the end.

The Skippers annihilated the Avengers 56-7 to punch their ticket into the state championship game for the first time since 1993. North will rematch Moses Brown at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at Cranston Stadium. The teams met during the season opener, which was an offensive onslaught that produced nearly 100 points. The Skippers edged the Quakers, 50-49.

Before the Division II Super Bowl, however, the Skippers will play their cross-town rivals, South Kingstown, during their annual Thanksgiving game at the University of Rhode Island’s Meade Stadium. Kick-off is at 10 a.m. If North defeats the Rebels, the Skippers will enter the championship game with an unblemished 11-0 record, including nine league wins. Among those victories, the Skippers have topped 30 points 10 times, including three 50-plus performances, with three shutouts. Suiting up from Jamestown during the championship game will be Ben Jennings, Isaiah Proffitt, Nolan Bush and Ephraim Graham. Jamestown also is represented on the coaching staff by Bill Piva, Alex Burke and Eric Bush.

While the varsity team has its sights set on a trophy, North’s freshman team already wrapped up its season Sunday with a Division II championship. The freshmen defeated Mount Hope, 22-16.
