Arts center offers photo classes with van der Wal

Townspeople who want to learn photography as a New Year’s resolution will have the perfect opportunity.

Marine photographer Onne van der Wal, a member of the elite Canon Explorers of Light, will host two workshops in January at the Jamestown Arts Center. The classes, intended for teenagers and adults, are 7:30-9 p.m. Jan. 16 and Jan. 23. The cost is $125 for a single course, $225 for the package. Registration is available at the art center’s website.

Van der Wal, a Jamestown resident, is one of the world’s most prolific marine photographers. In a clear, concise and humorous way, he will teach his students how to use their digital single-lens reflex cameras. He will show examples both on the big screen while referencing his little “Photography Reference Guide,” which is included in the fee.

The first class covers basic camera controls. He will discuss exposure, aperture, ISO and setup. He also will teach the importance of the histogram and benefits of shooting in RAW format opposed to JPEG. The second class is about workflow and post-production, including downloading the photos from the camera and processing the files in Lightroom.

Students only need to bring a notepad, pencil and their DSLR camera. For students without a camera, van der Wal will explore affordable options.

The arts center also is offering winter classes in printmaking, painting, creative writing and tai chi through mid-February. There also will be family ceramics on Thursdays for elementary children and their parents. Call 560- 0979 to learn more. Registration is available online.
