Black ice forces bridge closures

For the first time since February 2009, the Verrazzano and Pell bridges were closed for about an hour Saturday because of black ice.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority decided on the shutdown at 7:15 a.m. The agency consulted with state police following five minor collisions.

“It’s a unique situation being above water,” Buddy Croft, executive director, said. “Sometimes you have that flash freeze.”

State transportation crews were dispatched to salt and sand the bridges. Eastbound and westbound lanes on the two spans reopened between 7:55 a.m. and 8:44 a.m.
