Learn to build lantern at arts center workshops

Three workshops are scheduled for children to build lanterns for the March 2 parade: 1-4 p.m. Feb. 25, 4:30-6 p.m. Feb. 27 and 4:30-6 p.m. March 1 at the Jamestown Arts Center, 17 Valley St.

During these free seminars, instructors Jon Baylor and Susie Mathews will teach students to build lanterns using battery-operated light sources alongside recycled materials, including translucent plastic bottles, old lampshades and broken umbrellas. Children are then invited to march with their lanterns in the sixth annual parade to East Ferry, which is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., followed by a festival with refreshments at the arts center. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

All lanterns are welcome, including those built for previous parades. Students must bring their own light sources, such as flashlights or string lights. Some materials will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring their own. Register online or by calling the center at 560- 0979.
