Senior center plans trip to historic Portsmouth railroad

The Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad, built in 1852, includes a stretch along the Aquidneck Island coast with views only visible from the unique perspective of the tracks. The route passes private waterfront estates, two golf courses, a topiary garden and an Audubon nature preserve.

To explore this historic railway just east about 17 miles from Jamestown, the senior center will take a field trip on June 12 that will allow visitors to pedal their own rail explorers down the tracks. From the station at Common Fence Point, the 6-mile Northern Ramble route traverses the coastline between Portsmouth and the Sakonnet River. The trip also will include lunch at the Gulf Stream Bar & Grille.

A shuttle will depart the senior center, 6 West St., at 9:30 a.m. and return at 2 p.m. Cost is $24 per person, which doesn’t include lunch. Interested seniors should contact Betsey Anderson at 423-2761 before June 4 to reserve a seat.
