Workers are putting the finishing touches on phase one of the $420,000 project, which includes temporary asphalt to make the sidewalks safe for tourist season.

According to Town Administrator Andy Nota, other work that will be completed by Friday includes granite curb installation, stormwater drainage repair and underground electrical reconfiguration. Workers also prepared the seawall concrete and installed the base for the stone wall.

In the coming weeks, Nota said, workers will begin constructing stone walls and repairing the seawall railing system. This work will not impede parking or pedestrians, he said.

“These projects won’t interfere with the use and functionality of East Ferry,” Nota said. “With so many major events upcoming, it was important that we got in and got out.”

Following Labor Day, the contractor will begin reconstructing the parking lot, replacing the asphalt with concrete sidewalks and landscaping the green space. Benches, signs and trash receptacles will then be installed. Work is expected to last through November.

“They’ll tear the place apart in September,” Nota said. “But for now, we don’t want to be in the way of the sidewalks or parking lot. Although it’s patched and doesn’t look great, the job’s not done.”

Despite the lackluster appearance, Nota said East Ferry, including the marina, will be open for business when the Volvo Ocean Race arrives in Narragansett Bay next week.

“We’re be ready for the traffic,” he said.
