Peggy S. Maxwell

Peggy S. Maxwell, 98, “Nana Peggy,” formerly of Jamestown, passed away peacefully May 12, 2018.

She was the daughter of the late Sue Mitchell Carr Sanderson and John Sanderson.

Born and raised in New York, she graduated from Spence School and attended Sarah Lawrence College.

She had been married to the late Frank Brainard and the late Wellwood Hugh Maxwell.

Known for her elegance and kindness, Peggy made a career of hotel management in New York before she began a luxury vintage boutique while living in Westport, Conn., during the 1970s. She initiated a successful bed-and-breakfast registry service while living in Palm Beach, Fla. during the 1980s.

After moving to Jamestown in 1996, she became an active and effective volunteer at the Newport Art Museum, managing the Griffon Shop for several years. She also volunteered at the Newport Hospital Auxiliary, the Newport Flower Show and the Secret Garden Tours. She was a longstanding member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her son Sandy Brainard and wife Susan Bindig of New Hope, Pa.; her son Hugh (Max) Maxwell and daughter-in-law Katherine of Jamestown; grandson Hugh Maxwell of Warwick; granddaughter Nina Maxwell of Wickford; sister Elizabeth Carr Twitchell of Greenwich, Conn.; and her chosen granddaughter Katie Graham of South Hampton, Long Island.

Services will be private.
