Shuttle to take bikers across bridges

If, in the words of Brian May, you want to get on your bikes and ride, several area groups plan on making that easier this summer.

The Rhode Island Bridge Bike Shuttle will launch June 23 and continue through Nov. 3. Three times every Saturday, a free shuttle will take bikers over the Pell and Verrazzano bridges to locations in Newport, Jamestown and North Kingstown. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, Discover Newport, Bike Newport and the Newport County YMCA are partnering on the service.

“If you want to ride around Jamestown and then continue on to Narragansett, or you want to come to Jamestown and continue on to Newport, you’ll be able to get across and know you have a way back across the bridges,” said Eric Offenberg, director of engineering for RITBA.

“Whether they’re coming from Connecticut or Key West, whether they’re going to Newport or the Cape or Canada, we want to make sure that our bridges don’t get in the way of cyclists passing through Aquidneck Island,” said Bari Freeman, executive director of Bike Newport.

If this pilot program pans out, it may be expanded to include more times and dates, officials said.
