East Ferry marina won’t have fuel

There will be no fuel on the waterfront this boating season.

According to Conanicut Marine owner Bill Munger, the tanks under Veterans Memorial Square at East Ferry, which were installed in 1977, have expired their useful life per state law. Plans to replace those three tanks with two new ones have been in the pipeline since the lease was renegotiated in 2015, but red tape held up the process. No other boatyard in town has fuel tanks.

The marina currently has all its state and local permits in hand to start work in the fall. Because of holidays, haul-outs and hurricane season, the square only can be dug up between November and March.

Munger said this shortage hurts more than just his bottom line because it will detract cruising boats from stopping in town.

“It’s part of the economic engine that keeps the village running,” he said.
