Agnes Rarity Curtis

Agnes Rarity Curtis died July 16, 2018, at Newport Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Madeline B. Rarity (Newman) and David Rarity.

Born May 18, 1935, in White Plains, N.Y., she lived in Newport from an early age, after marriage lived in Trenton, N.J. until returning to Newport in 1968 before finally landing in Jamestown in 1996.

She was the wife of Alexander R. Curtis for 61 years. Mrs. Curtis graduated from Rogers High School in 1952.

A registered nurse, she graduated from Newport Hospital School of Nursing in 1955, later graduating from Salve Regina University with a bachelor and master degrees (1975 and 1979, respectively).

Agnes was a past, active PTA member and a 50-year member of the Newport Country League of Women Voters. She was a member of the Newport Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association, an original member of the Brenton State Park Advisory Committee and member of The Beavertail State Park Advisory Committee.

She began her nursing career as a pediatric nurse, later served as a nurse for six years at Newport County Project Head Start and in 1977 was the founding director of The Young Parents Program until retiring in 2001.

Agnes is survived by her husband, her two daughters Lauren Curtis of Milford, Conn., Madeline Turano and husband Dennis of Middletown, R.I., son-in-law Gerald Foley of Newport, her two sisters Lillian Hargrove of Newport, Josephine Battaglia of State College, Pa., and her brother David Rarity of Alexandria, Va.. She also is survived by four grandchildren, Jeffrey Curtis and wife Cheryl of Needham, Mass., Jill Angeles and husband Val of San Marcos, Calif., Cassondra Turano of Middletown, R.I. and Dennis Turano of Stanford, Conn. She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Agnes was preceded in death by her daughter Jenifer Foley.

The Curtis family would like to thank Visiting Nurse Home & Hospice for their care of Agnes throughout the years, especially Jane, Julie, Cathleen, Marlene, Rhonda & Wendy.

Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 20 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. July 21 at Emmanuel Church, corner of Dearborn and Spring streets in Newport with a burial service to follow at Island Cemetery, 30 Warner St., Newport.
