Explore Watson Farm for medicinal plants

A professional herbalist will lead a guided exploration from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at Watson Farm, 455 North Road.

Kristin Minto will explain identification, harvesting and preparation methods to transform common herbs and plants into home remedies. She will demonstrate proper drying methods to preserve the highest quality for teas.

Visitors also will learn to make tinctures. Under Minto’s guidance, students will make their own samples to take home. Visitors are invited to bring a lunch. Following the exploration, the farm will be open for self-guided tours of the 265-acre property along the East Passage of Narragansett Bay.

The workshop is outdoors in the midst of gardens where medicinal plants are cultivated, so visitors should dress for the weather. No dogs are allowed on this working farm where heritage breed sheep and cattle are raised.

The cost is $25. Registration is available by calling 423-0005 or by visiting the Historic New England website. Members of that organization receive a $5 discount.
