Former Ray Charles saxophonist to perform

A member of the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame will perform during a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at East Ferry Veterans Memorial Square.

Saxophonist Greg Abate is a Berklee College of Music graduate who played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra in the 1970s. He then formed the New England group Channel One before joining the Artie Shaw Orchestra in the mid-1980s, playing tenor sax under the direction of Dick Johnson.

Abate tours for more than 200 days annually around the globe, including Canada, the United Kingdom and Moscow. He has recorded 18 albums as the lead saxophonist.

This is the sixth of eight summer concerts sponsored by the town. If it rains, the performance will be relocated across the street to the recreation center, 41 Conanicus Ave.
