Sanctuary issue needs openness, townwide vote

To the editor:

I came away from this past Thursday’s working session of the sanctuary city committee with deep concerns about the openness of the process.

Because we would be committing ourselves to violating federal law and possible loss of federal money, this process should be as open as humanly possible. Scheduling the working session meeting for 3:30 p.m. during a work week does not meet this criteria.

Secondly, and most importantly, for the town to be designated a sanctuary city a referendum involving the entire town should have been requested. What was agreed to was that the town council would make the decision.

Jamestown should only be designated as a sanctuary city by a completely open “buy in” by the whole town.
