Tuesday is deadline to file for mail ballot

Voters looking to cast their ballots by mail have until Tuesday to file their application with the board of canvassers.

“Voters who are unable to head to the polls in November still have options for making their voices heard,” said Nellie Gorbea, Rhode Island’s secretary of state.

New in 2018, voters casting their ballot by mail will not have to pay for postage of their mail ballots. At the behest of Gorbea, this money was allocated in the 2018-19 budget signed by Gov. Gina Raimondo.

To be eligible, Jamestown voters must complete their applications and return them to the clerk’s office by 4 p.m. Oct. 16 at Town Hall, 93 Narragansett Ave. The application is available for voters to download at Rhode Island’s online Voter Information Center or by calling canvassing clerk Karen Montoya at 423- 9801. Completed ballots must be received by the state Board of Elections by 8 p.m. Nov. 6.

For eligible voters who miss this deadline for mail ballots, they can still vote by emergency ballot through the board of canvassers. That deadline is 4 p.m. Nov. 5.
