Secretary of State Ralph Mollis (left) honored John Mayers (right) of Jamestown recently with a 2012 Civic Leadership Award, which is given annually to high school seniors who make outstanding contributions to their school and their community. (Alexandra Bazar, center, of East Greenwich, was also honored.) “This award recognizes students who show an understanding of the importance public service has in a democratic society,” said Mollis. “They take the principles of civics and put them into action at home and at school.” Mollis asked high schools from around the state to nominate one female and one male member of the Class of 2012 based on their record of public service, leadership ability and academic achievement. Nearly 70 high schools ranging from Barrington to Woonsocket nominated seniors for the honor – John is a student at Providence Country Day School. This is the sixth consecutive year Mollis has presented the awards.
