Sgt. Jason Hopkins, at left, was recently recognized by the Newport Police Department for his assistance last December when he was dispatched at 1:50 a.m. to the Newport Bridge for the report of a suicidal person. He, along with officers from Newport Police, located a 21-year-old male wearing only shorts and a tee-shirt standing on the outside of the rail of the center span. The officers eventually convinced the subject to walk toward at them at which time they were able to reach over and grab him, bringing him to safety. Congratulating Hopkins is Newport Police Chief Gary Silva.
