Budget challenges ahead for state, Paiva Weed says

The Rhode Island General Assembly will have to make some tough decisions in 2009, State Sen. M. Teresa Paiva Weed said Wednesday morning. Paiva Weed was one of several Newport County legislators who spoke at a legislative breakfast hosted by the Newport County Fund of the Rhode Island Foundation and the Newport Daily News.

Live turkeys inspire lawn avenue artists

There were turkeys at Lawn Avenue School earlier this week, and they were not on the lunch menu. The birds were visiting the school as part of a new initiative through the Lawn Avenue School Improvement Team called Volunteers in Education. VIE takes teacher requests and matches volunteers and resources to meet the need.

Infant christened in 167 year-old gown

Lily Marie Phillips was christened on Oct. 19, wearing a gown that was first worn by an infant in 1841. Phillips is the step-granddaughter of local resident Wendy Harvey, who wore the gown at her own christening ceremony many years ago.

Two Jamestowners are headlining the newest play at the Courthouse Center for the Arts in West Kingston. Lisa and Caellum Kerr and the rest of the company are in rehearsals for "A Christmas Story," which, like the film of the same name, is based on the book by Jean Shepherd.

Riparian moorings not counted as part of island mooring fields

The commissioners voted unanimously at the Nov. 12 Harbor Management Commission meeting to follow current regulations and not count riparian moorings as part of mooring fields. A riparian mooring is one that is deeded with property rights to land owners.

Freshman football season a success

Don't let the North Kingstown freshman football team's record fool you. Although they won only one game, all parties involved saw this season as a huge success. Head Coach Andy Donnelly said that this was the biggest turnout North has ever seen.

According to the National Institute of Health, harmful noise—sounds that are too loud or loud sounds that last a long time cause sensitive structures in the ear to become damaged.

Newport Animal Hospital goes high tech green with expansion

The Newport Animal Hospital has nearly completed construction of a new state-of-the-art addition at its facility on Valley Road in Middletown. Owner Dr. Jack Civic of Jamestown said he's proud of the fact that the new building is environmentally friendly.

The Jamestown Soccer Association's 2008 fall recreation season concluded on a beautiful autumn morning Oct. 25, with a full complement of soccer players of all age groups cheered on by family, friends and occasionally hoarse coaches. The younger players received a trophy and the older players were given a JSA T-shirt to commemorate the end of the season.

Mittens, hats collected for women's center

With the expectation of a cold and long winter ahead, the staff at the Town Hall will start collecting mittens, scarves, hats and gloves for the annual holiday Mitten Basket. Items for the basket will be accepted as of today. Donations can be made Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will benefit the Newport County Women's Resource Center.

Youth basketball league at rec center

The Jamestown Recreation Department will offer youth basketball programs starting in January 2009. There will be a Youth Instructional League for kindergarten and first graders every Monday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and a Youth Instructional League for second graders every Monday night from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., both sessions beginning on Jan. 5.

Thanksgiving feast Sunday at library

The Friends of the Jamestown Library will host a re-creation of the first Thanksgiving on Sunday, Nov. 23, from 2:30 to 4:15 in the library meeting hall. There will be some great stories told and a screening of Charlie Brown's version of the holiday with his friends.

Recycle unused or outgrown soccer uniforms

All past and present Jamestown Soccer Association players from the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 spring competitive seasons can donate their uniforms that have been outgrown or are no longer used to new JSA soccer players. There will be a drop box at the Teen Center from Monday, Nov. 24 to Wednesday, Nov. 26. Hours are Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

North Kingstown drama troupe stages "Anatomy of Gray"

Jamestowner Georgia Wright will lead the North Kingstown High School NorTHheatre drama troupe as narrator June Muldoon in Jim Leonard's "Anatomy of Gray" this Friday through Sunday. Set in the late 1800s, "Anatomy of Gray" takes place in Gray, Ind., described by the young narrator as "the most boring place in the world.

Art association to hold holiday show

The Wickford Art Association welcomes visitors to the Little Picture Art Show and Sale. Over 300 works will be displayed by 50 different artists. Visit the Holiday Open House on Sunday, Nov. 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. The show will run from Nov. 21 to Dec. 24. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
