St. Matthew’s to host Mother’s Day recital

A Japanese pianist will perform a Mother’s Day concert at 2 p.m. May 12 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 87 Narragansett Ave.

Manabu Takasawa, a music professor at the University of Rhode Island, will begin the recital with Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 4 in E-flat major, a composition known as the German’s “Grand Sonata.” He will follow with Guillaume Lekeu’s piano sonata in G minor, which was composed in 1891 by the 21-year-old. Although it had been previously recorded, the live debut of Lekeu’s sonata was in 2014. Takasawa will conclude with two intermezzos and a rhapsody by Johannes Brahms.

The free concert is being sponsored by the Jamestown Community Piano Association, a nonprofit organization that sponsors performances on its 7-foot Schimmel grand. Donations are accepted. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
