Chorus performs in Providence Sunday

The Rhode Island Festival Chorus will present its inaugural concert RISings this coming Sunday, Nov. 20, at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. Six local choruses, including the Jamestown Community Chorus, will share the stage in an evening of choral music. The finale will feature six selections under the direction of Richard D. Mathey of Bowling Green, Ohio.

Among the selections to be performed by the Jamestown chorus is the debut of a new choral work by Jamestown resident and choral singer Bill Karl.

His “Prayer for Peace” is a choral work in a contemporary style, influenced by Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings.

The Rhode Island Festival Chorus is comprised of the Cranston Choral Company, Cumberland Lincoln Community Chorus, Jamestown Community Chorus, Narragansett Bay Chorus, North Kingstown Community Chorus, and the West Bay Chorale.

Local news anchor Karen Adams of WPRI Channel 12 will act as mistress of ceremonies.

Sign up now for new EMT course

The Jamestown Emergency Medical Services is offering an emergency medical technician training class for anyone willing to join the JEMS.

The course normally costs about $700 but the fee will be waived for anyone who completes the course, passes the exam and joins and commits to a duty shift with the JEMS. The Jamestown Fire Department has agreed to provide space for many of the classes.

The classes begin on Tuesday, Nov. 29 and end around April 8. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with a break from Dec. 21 to Jan. 2.

Jason Umbenhauer, a Warwick firefighter with family on the island, teaches the 18-week class. Several other island experts in the field of emergency response will assist him.

The all-volunteer emergency medical service needs additional qualified EMTs to maintain optimum service. Qualified volunteers receive a property tax abatement and shift stipend. Emergency transport is free to islanders.
