This class offers slow-paced muscle conditioning along with tendon and ligament flexion for improved balance and coordination. Participants will need to be able to get up and down from the ground. Participants should bring their own weights and mats if they have them. Instructor: Patricia Woodward

Aqua Therapeutics at St. Clare’s
Who: Ages 55+
Where: St. Clare’s (located at 309 Spring Street in Newport RI 02840)

Interested in an aquatics class in a heated indoor saltwater pool?! St Clare’s Pool is located in Newport, RI. This aqua class will be led by a certified therapy assistant with individual attention to our Jamestown senior center participants. Participants are in charge of transporting themselves to the facility in Newport. The parking lot at St. Clare’s is available for use. Participants will find the entrance to the parking lot by using the lit entrance off of Dennison Street.

Spots are limited to 8 max in this class.

Bridge (for experienced players)

Chair Yoga

Have you been interested in doing yoga but felt restricted or uneasy about getting down to the floor? Have you simply wanted to just have better flexibility and strength of movement? Whether you are at your desk or table, or confined to a wheelchair, yoga practiced in a chair can bring you the same benefits as floor practice. In this very relaxed and enjoyable program, you will gain flexibility, muscle strength, and peace of mind. Learn ways to move as well as breath techniques for your daily living. Come and have fun! Please wear comfortable clothing which allows you freedom of movement.

Heart-Wise Walking

Mah Jongg (for experienced players)

Do you enjoy strategic games to keep the brain buzzing? This game originated in China and is played with domino-like tiles. New game sets, cards and pushers are available for players. Meets weekly.

Tai Chi for Arthritis
Who: Adults Ages 55+
Where: Program will meet upstairs at the Senior Center during the Fall/Winter

Start the week off right and treat your body with the gift of Tai Chi. This program is based on a medically proven form of gentle movement designed by specialists to relieve pain, help prevent falls and improve overall health and wellness.

East Coast Swing Dance Lessons
Who: Adults Ages 55+
Where: Program will be held at the Recreation
Center (41 Conanicus Ave.)

East Coast Swing was first developed by Arthur Murray Dance Studios in the 1940’s based on lindy pop.East Coast Swing is danced typically with fast swing music, including; lindy hop, rock and roll and boogie-woogie. East Coast Swing music is typically characterized by big band, fast blues, or rock and roll. Additionally, today’s modern American Rhythm style of East Coast Swing is often danced to upbeat, energetic pop music. East Coast Swing music tends to be much faster and livelier than its counterpart, West Coast Swing.

This six-week program will teach you a variety of techniques that will help you better manage your chronic pain. Learn proven techniques that will help you ease chronic pain, be more active, improve your sleep, eat healthier, manage your medications, improve communications, and use problem solving skills for more confident decisions.

A Matter of Balance” is an award-winning program designed to reduce the fear of falling, increase confidence and improve activity levels among older adults. The program includes eight two-hour classes presented to a small group of 8-12 participants led by trained coaches. The program enables participants to reduce the fear of falling by learning to view falls as controllable, setting goals for increasing activity levels, making small changes to reduce fall risks at home, and exercise to increase strength and balance. The curriculum includes group discussions, mutual problem solving, role-play activities, exercise training, assertiveness training, and a few homework assignments. Participants learn about the importance of exercise in preventing falls and practice exercises to improve strength, coordination, and balance.

Vietnam Moving Wall at Rocky Point and lunch at Iggy’s
Who: Adults 55+

We will enjoy lunch at Iggy’s and then head to the moving wall to pay respects and listen to the reading of the 209 names of Rhode Islanders who gave their lives in Vietnam.

Saturday Newport Farmers Market Bus Trip

Time: Bus will Depart from Pemberton Apartments at 9:15 AM and will then stop at the
Senior Center at 9:25 AM
Participants will have plenty of time to look around the Saturday market to shop.

Wrights Dairy Farm & Bakery Trip
Who: Adults 55+

Time: Depart from the Senior Center at 12 PM
Cost: Trip cost $2, cost of lunch is on your own.

We will enjoy lunch at a 1 PM reservation at Beef Barn in North Smithfield (cost of lunch is on your own) and will then head to Wrights Farm for bakery shopping and to watch their cows be milked at 3 PM. Bring your own cooler bag so you are able to bring home fresh whipped cream, treats or milk!

Lunch Trip to Gregg’s Restaurant

SHOPPING TRIPS TO WALMART SUPERCENTER IN NORTH KINGSTOWN
Who: Adults 55+
Where: Seniors will be picked up from their home and dropped back off at their home
When: Tuesday, September 12th 2023, Tuesday October 10th 2023 & Tuesday, November 14th 2023 and Tuesday, December 12th, 2023
Time: Participants will be picked up beginning at 9 AM

Shoppers will be allotted an hour and thirty minutes to show at the Walmart Supercenter in North Kingstown. The Supercenter includes everything from household necessities, electronics to groceries. Reservations will be made up to 1 full business day in advance. Maximum limit is three reusable shopping bags per-person. Bags will be carried off the bus to each passenger’s front door. Drivers are not permitted to enter a participant’s residences. Space on the bus is limited to 12 passengers. Please call Eileen Donnelly at 401-423-2658 to make a reservation to shop.
