Learn about champion trees at Oct. 20 event

An expert with the Rhode Island Tree Council will discuss notable species at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 on the second floor of the Jamestown Golf Course, 245 Conanicus Ave.

John Campanini is the technical director of the council, a nonprofit organization founded in 1994 to create healthy urban and community forests. He will discuss what it takes to nominate a tree for champion status, which are trees noted for their contributions to the economy, culture and ecology. Twelve of the 144 champion trees in Rhode Island are located in Jamestown.

The free presentation is being sponsored by the local tree committee.
