Out of the Box to open new exhibition tonight

There will be an opening reception for the “Looms & Libraries” exhibition from 5-8 p.m. March 16 at the Out of the Box Studio & Gallery, 11 Clinton Ave.

This exhibition features textile-based artwork and large-scale tapestries created at six public libraries in Rhode Island. Out of the Box partnered with libraries in Warwick, Newport, Hopkinton, Westerly, Portsmouth and Middletown to provide inclusive, accessible weaving opportunities. Each library housed a 3-by-4-foot loom and people were invited to create a collaborative tapestry.

The opening reception also will acknowledge artists from Out of the Box Studio who helped manage the project. The studio supports so-called outsider artists, which refers to people with developmental disabilities. A grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts helped finance the project.
