Three-way stop sign by beach unneeded

To the editor:

I saw in The Jamestown Press that Police Chief Ed Mello wants to consider a three-way stop sign at the intersection of Southwest Avenue, Hamilton Avenue and Beavertail Road.

I believe this is far from ideal. I travel through this intersection with regularity and have not had any difficulty. As long as drivers use their blinkers appropriately there is no issue.

Local residents wanted to put a stop sign on Walcott Avenue where High Street intersects. The state Department of Transportation said no to this. The three-way stop proposed, in my opinion, would not fare any better.

Now that we are speaking about traffic safety, here is another idea. With the increase in bike and pedestrian traffic, what we do need is for the town to address the speed on Beavertail Road.

For instance, Walcott has sidewalks/ bike paths and the speed is only 25 mph. Maybe the speed on Beavertail Road should follow suit since there is far less room and many more twists and turns.
