Jamestown residents with older cellular phones should upgrade in the new year in order to ensure they can connect to 911.
The Rhode Island Department of Public Safety is reminding people to buy new phones as mobile carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, complete the phaseout of their 3G networks.
Many older cell phones will be unable to use data or make and receive calls and texts. This will affect 3G mobile phones and certain older 4G mobile phones that do not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE or HD Voice).
